Global Learning & Knowledge Exchange Project

The objective of the DGM Global Learning and Knowledge Exchange (DGM Global) project is to strengthen networks and partnerships for DGM Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) within and across regions with a view to enhancing their representation and voice at regional and global levels.

Over the last year, DGM Global concluded the first phase of the DGM Global project and launched the second phase. DGM Global carried out numerous activities across the four project components, including the virtual launch of the 2020 DGM Annual Report, a virtual exchange with DGM Guatemala NSC members, NEA, and World Bank, DGM Global Learning Fellowship call for applicants and selection of fellows, global steering committee preparation, and virtual dialogues.

DGM Global also participated in the Nature for Life hub, Global Landscapes Forum Africa, Climate Week, and other important international climate related events.

Eight Indigenous and local community representatives from Burkina Faso, Mexico, Brazil, and Republic of Congo were selected as the first cohort of DGM Global Learning fellows. The DGM Global Learning Fellowship aims to cultivate long-term strengthening of IPLC leadership within the DGM network by providing virtual in-depth global learning experiences for DGM subproject implementers as a way of building capacity in DGM-specific topics, amplifying IPLC voices, and enhancing the visibility of their efforts and expertise. The objective of the fellowship is to strengthen local to global storytelling, shared learning, and knowledge exchange across the DGM network so that IPLCs can learn from and potentially adapt one another’s best practices in DGM project implementation to a local context.

This year’s eight Global Learning Fellows’ areas of expertise range from traditional knowledge, to territorial management, gender, social inclusion, identity, agroforestry, governance, community enterprises, and more.

The Global Learning Fellowship is a four-month program where fellows participate in and present on their experience and results in knowledge sharing sessions, create relevant knowledge products to share back with their communities and networks, and receive virtual training/e-learning on a particular area of interest.

In the international climate policy arena, DGM Global has been actively engaged in UNFCCC LCIPP (Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform) since its early beginnings. As part of the Paris Agreement, LCIPP represents an innovative model of non-state actor’s engagement in the UN climate negotiations and a step forward in recognizing the knowledge systems and efforts of local communities and indigenous peoples in addressing climate change.

Over the past year, DGM Global participated in LCIPP Facilitative Working Group meetings and trainings, and coordinated actively with partners such as International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change (IIPFCC) and contributed with key recommendations to prepare the new work plan to be adopted in the next COP26. By way of this coordination and engagement, government representatives learned about the contributions that Indigenous peoples have on climate action.
